Kai was my keeper from my first litter. While he didn’t turn out to be a show dog, he became my best buddy! Incredibly smart, willing to please, friendly to all, and snuggly, his personality and temperament were excellent from the start! I never intended to breed him, but after we found out that he had a rare haplotype that we need to preserve in this breed, we bred him to a lovely, structurally sound girl. The result was Pixie, who sadly passed away as a young pup due to a brain stem abscess. It was heartbreaking, but her death may help others survive what happened to her; see her page for more information.
Before he got old, Kai loved going to agility classes with me! I was never interested in competing (I’m not competitive and I’m too physically broken for that!), but I knew the challenge to his intellect combined with the physical activity would be right up his ally. One of our instructors told me, privately, that she usually doesn’t like small dogs in her classes because they’re often poorly trained and reactive, but she wanted me to know she loved Kai! He also aced his S.T.A.R. puppy class. He did so well that the instructor asked if he could come back and repeat the class, for free, so he could be her “example dog.”
Kai loved training of any kind. When he was a pup, he preferred to get his kibble as training treats rather than just eat it out of a bowl. I’m not the best trainer, but he sure made me feel like a pro! I never did send in his paperwork for his Trick Dog titles, but according to the checklists, he’d have his Advanced title if I had.
Now in his late autumn years, Kai’s favorite thing is to just snuggle next to me, under a blanket. He’s 14.5 as of writing this, and even though he’s had his shoulder reconstructed after a dog attack, he’s completely deaf, has cataracts, and a touch of arthritis, none of that has really slowed him down much! He still loves to do tricks, though I only ask him to do ones that are kind to his old bones. He may be getting creaky, but his eyes are still bright and full of life!
Kai is co-owned by Layle Griffioen (Voici IGs)
